What exactly is a milestone birthday session?

I’m glad you asked! Birthday pictures, also called “Spotlight Sessions” or “Milestone Sessions” at my Lehigh Valley photo studio are all about that birthday child. A chance to show off how much they’ve grown since last year. A chance to commemorate their big birthday year with a number showing off their age (which they LOVE to proudly hold)!

It consists of one or two backdrop choices and outfits to coordinate. I have a variety of props to hold, chairs and benches to sit on and ladders to climb. I have suitcases in lots of colors, flowers in every color, decorative additions to the set like rustic boxes and so much more.

Flow of session:

-Welcome and hellos

-A moment to wipe faces, walk around and check out the studio and all the fun things

-Change the child into their outfit if needed

-First backdrop portraits. Holding their birthday number. Use of my many chairs and props

-Outfit change if applicable

-Second outfit portraits. More props. More poses

-Clean up and coats on

-Lollipop for smiles (with parent’s permission of course)

-Rundown of what to expect next and how long til’ you see your proofs

-High fives and bye-byes

What if my kid won’t last that long?

Don’t worry, I’ve got a fast trigger finger. The shoot consists of about 30-40 minutes of shooting time and depending of the child’s temperament, a little more or a little less. I have secret magic ways to make even the most tricky little smilers to let them out!

Fun Ideas For Birthday Photos

If you child loves cars and trucks: I have a stoplight, road signs, metal crates and cars and trucks out the wazoo.

If you child loves dress up and princesses: I have pearl necklaces, a tiara, a princess backdrop, flowers and fancy chairs.

Do you want to keep it neutral and timeless? Let’s add some greenery and decorative crates.

Do you want a rainbow birthday shoot? I have lots of pastel rainbow backdrops, boho rainbow backdrops, rainbow tutus and bubble necklaces and balloons to match it all!

Dinos? I have a backdrop that looks like Jurassic Park, you bring the dinos!

Boho vibes? I have soo many options for boho birthday photos.

Firetrucks? I have a fire station birthday backdrop that kiddos love!

We have an American flag painted on brick backdrop if you’re into the Americana theme!

Get creative with your kiddos favorite movies and bring their toys and I can almost guarantee I have a backdrop that can work well with it.

What should my child wear for their birthday photoshoot?

I always think it’s best to strive for comfort. Ie. Don’t put your child in a suit and bowtie if you know they are bothered by itchy or tight clothes. Choose classic and timeless clothes so that they won’t go out of style. Two backdrop option is the best way to not only get those classic birthday portraits but to also be able to highlight their personality on the second backdrop with maybe their birthday party theme or just a more casual or fun outfit! Shoes are often mentioned to me from clients…. if you don’t have newer, clean shoes.. skip them altogether! Bare feet are adorable. Especially for the littlest ones!

What should I bring?

Anything that might help my child feel more comfortable. A stuffy. A noisemaker. A toy from home. For themed birthday pictures, you could bring some party decor or items that coordinate. Believe it or not, I DON’T have a prop for EVERY theme there is… although it seem like it sometimes!

At the end of the day, book the session. Don’t worry that your child might misbehave, if they’re comfy with me… they will act up a little bit and that’s okay! We named it a Spotlight Session to highlight their unique growing personalities and bodies! Your toddler won’t always be afraid or running away from every set we put them on and your six year old might not always want to do big twirls in her princess dress! Book the shoot and capture THIS moment in time.
