Do you regret not booking a newborn shoot? Let’s talk about what an older newborn infant photoshoot looks like.

Hey mama! The fact that you’re reading this blog right now shows me how much you care about that little bundle of joy, even if you didn’t get baby’s first photos captured when they were a fresh seven days new, you’re still in luck.

When Covid-19 struck the planet and my Lehigh Valley Photo Studio was shut down for 10 weeks, I got backed up on 32 newborn photoshoots that I wasn’t able to capture during that time. Babies kept coming but I couldn’t take them. I had to improvise when the time came to open back up.

My oldest “newborns” during that time were actually nine to ten weeks old by the time they were allowed to come to see me. In the past, I turned away the older babes because if I’m being honest, they scared me…. but after Covid, I now welcome them! I embraced the wide open eyes, the beginning stages of smiles, the filled out skin and chubbier cheeks and even got every single one of those little babes to fall asleep like the newborn photos their parents were robbed of.

Older Newborn Photoshoot Pros & Cons:

Pros:

• Eye Contact: Newborns who are older than 4 weeks old will have much better eye contact than a brand new freshie.
• Filled out: They have begun to fill in their skin from all of that eating they’re doing, making them look plump and even chubby cheeked at times!
• Still Sleepy: Depending on the session you book, I should be able to get an older newborn to close their eyes for a shot or two.
• Perfect size for family photos: They’re a little bigger now so while wrapped up like baby burritos, they fill the wrap up quite nicely making them perfect for kissable snuggles.
• Store Bought Outfits will fit better on an older newbie than on a freshie.

Cons:

• Less Sleepy
• Possible Skin Issues: but don’t worry, I edit that.
• Not as Flexible: baby may not go into those squishy little poses that they might have a few weeks ago… a wrapped up session might be perfect for you, be sure to check it out here!
• Less Tolerant: baby won’t be as tolerant of my shenanigans- they will tucker out pretty quickly and get overstimulated. So this shoot will be slightly more fast paced.

Your photoshoot with an older newborn will consist of laying on their back with various wraps and on various blankets, a selection of headbands or hats from my collection, wrapped up shots and laying down on floaki rugs photographed from above. If they fall asleep during their shoot, we will be able to get them laying on their belly and mimicking the seven day old newborn poses.

That’s about it. I absolutely LOVED my Covid babies and enjoyed the challenge. They made me step outside of my comfort zone and step into my creative side. I now welcome older infants for their first photoshoots and I look forward to filling my calendar with more of these!
